Byron Bay

Even though Byron Bay is in NSW, it’s so close to Brisbane it makes for a perfect break. Wildly popular with tourists during the summer, it’s a great place to explore on the off or shoulder season.

Byron Bay boasts a reputation of an alternative lifestyle and is home to a lot of creative people. There are plenty of art galleries around to have a look at and the Arts and Industry Park have created a map that will direct explorers to local restaurants, cafes, galleries and studios. There are also plenty of weekly and monthly markets full of great local arts and crafts. Check out the Artisan Market held on Saturday nights in the Byron Bay Railway Park, or the Byron Bay Community Market held on the first and third Sunday of every month at Butler St Reserve.

Of course, you can’t go to Byron without visiting the beaches. Seven Mile Beach is popular for 4WDers and fishermen, and the beaches around the area are known as some of the cleanest in the state. You can take a walk on the Cape Byron Walking Track past the pretty lighthouse to the most easterly point in Australia. Depending on the season, you can even spot whales and dolphins in the ocean. You can also tour the lighthouse or relax in the café nearby. There’s also some great national parks nearby to explore, including World Heritage listed rainforests.

Visit the Macadamia Castle, and see about 150 native and farmyard animals, learn from the keepers and get interactive with the animals. There’s also a great café, local food and even a mini golf course that will keep the kids busy. Take a tour of the local towns and areas around Byron Bay and see great places such as Crystal Castles, and plenty more to keep you occupied.
